2013 Checkered Flag Party

On February 15, 2014, Chicago Region held its Checkered Flag Banquet to celebrate the 2013 season. Over 100 people took part in the festivities, which were hosted by Lake Forest SportsCars. Food and drink were catered by Goose Island, everyone’s appetite for delicious libations, comestibles, camaraderie, and automobiles was satiated.

The evening began at 5:00 PM, with open bar and appetizers. Goose Island’s Chicago signature brew, 312, as well as a delicious pale ale were available, and wine and Goose Island soda were also served. Old friends and new joined in conversation. The showroom was open for review, as the guests browsed among the Aston Martins, Ferraris, Maseratis, and McLarens.

Rick Bentson, 2014 Chicago Region Regional Executive, welcomed the group and made special mention of Division Director Bruce Lindstrand, Divisional Executive Steward JoAnne Jensen, and Blackhawk Farms owner Paul Musschoot. Rick then honored the eight members in attendance who each have been members for over 50 years. Rick also read a letter from Chicago Region member Carl Haas, who unfortunately was not able to attend. Dinner was served at 7:00, with a fantastic selection of breads, salad, vegetables, potatoes, various pasta dishes, and chicken. A selection of awards were presented at 8:00.

This year’s award recipients were:

  • Fred Wacker Driver of the Year: Mike Varacins

  • Rookie of the Year: Michael Pesch

The outgoing Regional Executive, Ed Locke, was presented with his Silver Card, a commemorative wall hanging, and a special gift, which left him in a rare state of speechlessness!

Everyone left into the gently falling snow satisfied, happy, and proud to be a member of the Chicago Region of the Sports Car Club of America.

A special thank you must be extended to Rick Mancuso and the staff at Lake Forest SportsCars, for providing the exquisite venue for this year’s Checkered Flag Banquet.
