The Chicago Region SCCA celebrates twenty years of the “Triple Crown®” award

Twenty years ago the Chicago Region SCCA, created and established the Triple Crown® award which is presented to a driver that meets the three requirements of the star pillars, June Sprints® Champion, Conference Champion, and National Champion.  The prerequisites are, finishes first in class at the Chicago Region SCCA June Sprints® at Road America®, wins either their home division class championship, or a SCCA Majors Conference Class Championship, or is a National Points Leader within their class.  The last requirement to the Triple Crown is winning the SCCA National Championship Runoffs® for that class in that race season/year.

This coveted award was originally established in 2001 and following its inception the Chicago Region SCCA trade-marked the name and award “Triple Crown” used in the context with motor racing.  Originally the award was presented at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs®.  Currently the Triple Crown award is shipped to the recipient following the Run-offs.  With this award the driver not only joins a prestigious group that few can claim membership but the winners from the most recent year also receive a paid entry to the June Sprints for the next year.

In the twenty years since the inception of this award there have only been nine multiple winners. Niki Coello FC, Michael Varacins FV, and Scott Rettich FE, have each won the award three times. Hans Peter CSR, Brad Stout FV, Andy McDermid AS, Darryl Wills FM, and Danny Steyn STL, have won the award twice in their respective class. In 2013, Lawrence Loshak was the first person to win in two different classes (FB and HP) in the same year!  In 2008 and 2009 there were eight winners, the most in any one year.  In 2020 which was an extremely unprecedented competition year there were twelve contenders, from seven different Regions all hoping to win this award?  Four of the twelve were successful, Mark Boden (T2), Michael Borden (T4), Joe Moser (STL), and Jesse Prather (EP).  Over the years there have been winners from across the country from many different regions and divisions, and it all begins at the Chicago Region SCCA June Sprints.
