June Sprints Storylines
Streak Continued
It was 1956 when the first full season of racing began at Road America, and theĀ Chicago RegionĀ June Sprints was part of that year’s schedule. Back then, the June Sprints was a component of the SCCA National Sports Car Championship, a series that determined SCCA champions prior to today’s RunoffsĀ®. If you thought a pandemic would stop the June Sprints streak, you were wrong. This year’sĀ Hoosier Racing Tire SCCAĀ® Super TourĀ WeatherTech Chicago RegionĀ®Ā June SprintsĀ®Ā represents the 65th successive running of this prestigiousĀ event at Road America, possibly making it the longest consecutively held road race in America.
Lots of Machinery
There are approximately 470 entries anticipated for the WeatherTech Chicago RegionĀ® June SprintsĀ®. Washington to Florida, California to Massachusetts — SCCA Club road racers will be at Road America to have #funwithcars. Fields with 15 entries or more include: Formula 500, Formula F, Formula Vee, Formula Continental, Formula Enterprises 2, GT-2, E Production, F Production, Touring 2, Touring 3 and the Prototype 1 class. Also, the Super TouringĀ® Lite and Super TouringĀ® Under fields have gotten their own combined Group 1A race! And at around 75 entries a piece, Spec Miata and Spec Racer Ford Gen3 will again be a June Sprints spectacle not to be missed.
2020 Runoffs Precursor
As noted above, the June Sprints at Road America was once part of the SCCA National Sports Car Championship, a series deciding SCCA’s best prior to the RunoffsĀ®. In recent history, from 2009 to 2013, Road America was the Runoffs venue where champions earned their honors. This year, Road America will again be the battleground where SCCA champions are crowned as that venue hosts theĀ 57thĀ SCCA National Championship RunoffsĀ in October. What happens this weekend during the WeatherTech ChicagoĀ RegionĀ® June SprintsĀ® may very well serve as a “crystal ball” for predicting 2020 SCCA national champions.
Spectators Welcome!

Results Hoosier Racing Tire SCCAĀ® Super Tour – June 12-14
Road America — Elkhart Lake, WisconsinCompetition Sunday at Road America brought to a close the 65th running of theĀ WeatherTechĀ ChicagoĀ RegionĀ®Ā June SprintsĀ®, part of this year’s Ā Hoosier Racing Tire SCCAĀ® Super Tour. With two days of intense battles completed, SCCA road racers now have an idea who should be considered “favorites” to bring home a National Championship this fall as the RunoffsĀ® return in October to Road America’s 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
Big Time
There were nearly 480 entries at this year’s June Sprints, and more than 120 of those entries participated in Spec Racer Ford Gen3 (SRF3) and Spec Miata (SM) races. It was Brian Schofield, in the No. 61 PM Racing SRF3, who claimed victory Saturday over the 60-car field. On Sunday, Schofield did it again, but not without pressure from folks like Scott Rettich, John Black, Bobby Sak, Denny Stripling and TJ Acker, who led a great deal of Sunday’s 13-lap race.Ā But Schofield was able to eke it out on the last lap for the win.
The SM class saw two different winners over the weekend for the 60 competitors in that group. Saturday’s race had teammates Jim Drago and Preston Pardus hook up and decide the race amongst themselves, with Pardus coming out ahead in the No. 32 Danus Utilities/East Street Racing/5x Racing/ PR Mazda Miata. On Sunday, Pardus and Drago looked as if they were going to duplicate their performance from the previous day, but Kyle Greenhill threw a wrench in that plan. He managed to split Pardus and Drago on several occasions, which also gave Chris Haldeman and Danny Steyn a chance to mix it up for the lead.
