IMSA President John Doonan announces that the top class of IMSA racing will be known as GTP

John Doonan, president of IMSA, will be the guest speaker at Chicago Region SCCA’s membership meeting on Wednesday, April 20, at K1 Speed in Addison. He’ll tell us about the new class structure for the 2022 IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship, the exciting influx of manufacturers to IMSA series, the expanded relationship between IMSA and SCCA, and the new Le Mans Daytona hybrid (LMDh) car coming in 2023, which will be accepted to race in IMSA and the FIA’s World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Before becoming president of IMSA and coping with the challenges of running a race organization during the COVID-19 pandemic, John was the face of Mazda’s North American motorsports program for many years, leading the company’s involvement in IMSA, the American Le Mans Series, Grand Am, MX-5 Cup and the USF2000 championship as well as Mazda’s driver development program. A longtime SCCA and Chicago Region member, he attended his first race at age 6 weeks – Chicago Region’s June Sprints® at Road America. John, his father and grandfather were all racers. If there is time and he’s willing, he may even talk about finding his father’s and grandfather’s race cars.

Also on hand will be Burt Levy, author of The Last Open Road series. Copies of his new book, The 200 MPH Steamroller Book III – Out of the Mist, will be available for purchase.

We hope you’ll join us for this presentation. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at K1 Speed, 2381 Army Trail Road, Addison, Ill., 60101. There’s no fee, but please let us know that you are coming by registering.
