Wacker’s Wend

This is the ninth installment in our series showcasing the Historic Markers placed around the original race circuit on the public roads in Elkhart Lake.

As the cars left town and drove south on South Lake Street headed towards Quit Qui Oc Golf Course they made a right turn at County J A. Just past this turn is Wacker’s Wend, named after Frederick G. Wacker Jr. the founder of the Chicago Region SCCA in 1948 and our first Regional Executive.

Fred raced here at Elkhart Lake, and at Watkins Glen in New York State. He also participated in five Formula One World Championship races, debuting on June 21, 1953 but unfortunately scored no championship points.

The marker at this point on the 1951, 52 race circuit reads “Wacker’s Wend, Named for Fred G. Wacker Jr. who drove Jim Kimberly’s Healey Silverstone to a second place finish in the 1950 sixty mile main event.” This marker was donated by: Elkhart Lake’s Road America Inc. (Historic Race Circuits of Elkhart Lake).
